Some sound interesting, others not so much.
And, no, no courses on our current president.

So, I was bored last night and decided to check out the latest Harry Potter flick. Order was my favorite HP book thus far, so I’m sorry to say that movie was pretty lame. I wonder if I should even call it a movie; it was more like a bunch of scenes put together to show off the director’s camera work. The special effects were great (of course), but you just never get into the movie (and I say this as a big fan of the series).
All the adults of the film were fantastic in their roles (let’s be honest, Alan Rickman IS Snape). But none of them got the screen time they deserved (except for Imelda Staunton, who was perfect for Umbridge). Also, I’m officially sick and tired of every single kid in the movie (except for the Weasley family, and Neville). None of them seemed to be acting; they were just kind of there, saying their lines like the director told them. The rivalries and back-and-forth were all but gone in this movie, and they were sorely missed.
The final scenes in the Ministry started to improve my opinion of the movie. Except that it is impossible to tell what is going on. It looks like a bunch of black clouds whipping around, scaring the kiddies. Sirius’ death scene tried way too hard to be dramatic and ended up being pretty lame (seriously, I almost laughed, at Gary Oldman!). The final battle with Voldemort was another letdown.
There was, however, two bright spots. Since reading Order, I’ve had a pretty big crush on Tonks. Can’t say I was disappointed:

That Lupin, what a lucky dog. So, Tonks was great, but there was one thing that made the movie even better to me: inept government bureaucrats refusing to help defend the people who put them in office, and the citizenry subsequently preparing themselves for battle. Nice message there.
In sum, read the book, and borrow the DVD if you get bored one day.

Over at MercatorNet, a defense of Harry Potter. I’ve never really understood the strong feelings against the Potter series (though I suppose I understand somewhat their objections), so it’s a nice surprise to see a socially conservative website celebrating one of the best parts of the books: friendship.

I just finished the boxset of the Harry Potter books Santa Claus got me. Gosh, what an awesome series. Mrs. Rowling sure knows how to spin a yarn. Can’t wait now until the last book.
